I cancelled my Massage | Here Are 3 Things I Did Instead #selfcare

Two weeks ago,  I had a massage scheduled all in the name of “self care”. I’m a mom and I always look for opportunities to “TREAT YOSELF” lol (in my Tom and Donna voice for my Parks and Rec fans). Well, the night before I decided to cancel for two reasons. 1, it was on family day and sometimes I just like to chill with my hubby and the baby without having anywhere else to be. And 2, I just didn’t feel like having to pump and hustle about in order to be away from Dream. But I still wanted to enjoy that time I had set aside for myself, so here is what I did instead:

1. I made myself breakfast and enjoyed it IN SILENCE.

I’ve come to enjoy and look forward to a bowl of homemade oatmeal and a cup of my special coffee every morning, but I don’t often get to enjoy it without constantly side-eyeing Dream to make sure she is happy and safe. So this was a special moment. Keem and Dream were still sleeping so I had this little pocket of time just for me! Yaaasss! I left my phone in my bedroom,  and made my way to the kitchen. No baby to keep an eye on, no husband to help out the door… just me, my breakfast and my thoughts/prayers! It was great!

2. I did a full yoga session, UNINTERRUPTED.

Yoga has been so good for this mom body. The stretches, both pre/postnatal, have helped me tremendously. And as much as I love working out, as a new mommy I rarely get to workout without Dream being RIGHT THERE. So this was a true delight. A bonus moment. A baby free, breath focused, energizing yoga session to get my day started! Another win!

3. I folded the laundry,  while listening to one of my fave Les Brown talks, INTENTLY.

For some laundry is a task… but I actually enjoy doing/folding laundry. I know I’m special 😅. Listen, being in my own space (bringing order to that space), with no one else but myself to worry about in that moment, is EVERYTHING. Me and my jolly self, sat in the middle of the floor folding my little life away! I was so content!

One of my closest friends sent this to me after our check-in that morning, and it is totally worth sharing:

“It’s important to recognize the other ways we self-care! There is something to having a listing of things that invoke the same feelings of a massage but touch a different part of ‘self'”

So powerful! Yes a massage and a pedicure are amazing… but doing those things that evoke feelings of accomplishment, restfulness, and peace of mind are also vital ways to empower and care for “self”!

So I just want to encourage you. As you make the time for “self-care”, know that this isn’t a “one size fits all” kind of situation. I think along the way we’ve lost the focus… self care is literally caring for self…mind, body and spirit! And that doesn’t always HAVE to show up in the form of a trip to the salon. It can show up in the form of a nap, a workout or simply basking in the presence of our Good Good Father (AMEN, somebody)!!

So find what works for you and do just that. Look at the feelings and state of mind you wish to elicit, and embrace the practices that will keep you in that space.

Self Check; Stop Cutting Yourself Short

Have you ever taken a shortcut only to have it cause more harm than good?  Maybe you thought you’d be saving time, or saving yourself from having to do more work, and in the end found yourself putting in twice as much time and effort because you didn’t do it right the first time around?

Guilty!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been taking a SERIOUS look at my life and how I’ve been living. As bubbly and motivated as I am, I am still a work in progress, and there are things that I need to work on doing better. So I had to ask myself, “where in my life have I opted for the ‘shortcut’ versus going through the process”?  And why?

Sometimes, we take the shortcut to avoid the inevitable consequences of our choices. Sometimes, we take the shortcut because we don’t want to do the work, or we just aren’t prepared (#realtalk). Sometimes, it’s simply in an effort to “work smart” and not hard. I totally get it. A shortcut isn’t always bad, but in some instances it can be detrimental to our success.

So take a look at your life on your journey; whether in your career, your business, workout plan, friendships, even in your marriage! Check yourself, boo!  Are you taking shortcuts, cutting corners or giving less than your best? Are you avoiding the discomfort of the growth process? Remember, the process is the key ingredient to your greatness. So today, let’s commit to STOP cutting ourselves short. Stop, delaying your success, and face the process head on! Address the areas in your life that need work,  and start fresh with a mind of excellence.

Trust the process!

5 Essential “To-Dos” for a Flawless Face!

img_7732

As a self proclaimed makeup enthusiast, I am all about the best of beats. However, over the years I’ve learned that a flawless face begins with proper skin care, and a few basic habits to practice daily. In many instances, your makeup application is only as flawless as the skin that lies beneath. So before we talk about all the beloved potions and powders (I promise to post about that later in our Beauty Academy),  I wanted to share 5 essential “to-dos” to ensure a flawless face!

1. Cleanse your face daily.

Sounds simple, but I can’t even tell you how many women I’ve talked to who don’t wash their faces daily. This is a non-negotiable in my book.  When ever you put on makeup, it’s so important to remove it. Yes, I was once guilty of falling asleep with a full beat after a night of fun, but that soon changed as I saw the horrible effects that had on my skin. So now, no matter how tired I am, I remove my makeup and wash my face every evening. Then again in the morning.  A good makeup remover, along with a gentle cleanser, (I’m partial to Oil of Olay) will do wonders for the skin.

2. Use a deep cleansing masque/mask.

A good mask will cleanse your pores and give you a nice fresh face for application.  If you’re an oil-face like me, and you workout often, then you will find the need to deep cleanse more often than others. (I use mine once a week). I don’t want any gunk left on my face to clog my pores, which essentially leads to more break outs. Do yourself a favor, and invest in a deep cleansing mask.

3. Wash your makeup brushes.

I’m going to just say it… if you don’t wash your brushes, then washing your face is almost pointless. What some don’t realize is that on the surface of that beautiful fluffy brush are tiny little bacteria that will grow and cause breakouts if left unaddressed. And just think each time you dip that bacteria infested brush into your foundation it’s just spreading. Not to mention it can lead to very uneven, streaky application. So it’s time to get serious. Whether after you apply, or just before you go to bed, set aside some time to clean your brushes.

4. Use a daily moisturize.

I have combination/oily skin, so for years I was under the impression that facial moisturizers were only for those with dry skin. After doing my research, and speaking with the professionals, I came to understand that all skin needs moisture, and that there are actually a number of great serums and moisturizers for combination/oily skin. So regardless of the “type” of skin you may have, be sure to invest in a daily facial moisturizer, and use it.  And ladies, body lotion doesn’t count. The skin on your face is different from the skin on your body. So care for it accordingly!

5. Drink up, glow up.

Get your glow on, and drink more water. Many professionals  recommend that you drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily to keep you hydrated,  and help rid your body and skin of toxins. Many even say that drinking the proper amount, can leave you with a beautiful glow! We all know how important water is, so now it’s time to take it to the next level  and actually drink our daily dose.  So drink up! Your skin will love you for it!
