“Lipstick Isn’t for Me”💋

I remember when I first started wearing makeup. I found the perfect foundation for my chocolatey complexion, and learned a bit about liner and mascara. Over time, and after countless YouTube videos and convos with my fellow makeup enthusiasts,  I finally got it right! Well, in all areas except for one… lipstick. Unlike my other skills, I only gave lipstick a good 5 tries, before I decided it wasn’t for me. I loved how it looked on others, but I just couldn’t figure it out. Lipstick on my teeth, lipstick on my fingers… legit, “smudge galore”!

I was completely done…

Until my  beautiful friend came along and got me all the way together. (You know who you are!)

We went out to lunch one day, and I happened to comment on how fabulous her lip color looked! She paused for a moment,  and asked “where is YOUR lipstick, friend”? I cringed a bit on the inside, and replied “Lipstick isn’t for me”.  She wasn’t buying it. She always commented on my bare lips, but this day was different.  She rolled her eyes, and pulled out her lipstick  collection. She went over different types of lipsticks, lip liners,  and finishes. Basically, she was encouraging me to give it another try. And I did just that! I went back to my vanity and tried again… and again… until I got it right!

LOOK AT ME NOW!

As I think of my makeup/lipstick journey, I can’t help but wonder… “what have I written off in my life, simply because I found it challenging and didn’t invest in the ‘know-how'”? Take a moment, and think about your own life.  Have you ever written something off, simply because you didn’t know how to do/use/perform it? You may have tried a few times, but things didn’t go as planned.  Now, you’re walking around dismissing opportunities and blessings because you’ve convinced yourself “this/that isn’t for me”, when in reality  you haven’t even put in the effort. Lord, help us all!

Today, I encourage you to try again!  I understand, we aren’t all gifted to do everything! But, as you read this post, something came to mind that you know  you need to revisit. It’s time to stop dismissing, and start refining. (I’m speaking to myself, here! Yassss!) Despite how challenging it may seem, go back and sit down at  your “vanity” and try again! Invest in the “know-how”, perfect your skills, and grab hold of every opportunity the Lord sends your way!

Indeed, that great life IS for you!

“Wonderfully Made” #IAFAWM

fullsizerIn a world that is utterly obsessed with perfection, it’s  so easy to get caught up in the hype. We consume so much throughout the day, that when we finally look in the mirror we often pick at those things that are seen as less than perfect… my nose is too big, my hair is too thin, my thighs are too thick… and the list goes on and on. Subsequently we strive to fit into society’s “perfect” mold, all in the name of being “Beautiful”… as if perfection were the prerequisite for such a title.  It’s a viscous cycle that I’ve known all too well.

But let me share something amazing with you… a powerful truth that will SET YOU FREE!

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;  Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well” Psalms 139:14 (NKJV)

Yaass! When you truly begin to understand this powerful verse, you’ll never look at yourself the same again. When you look in the mirror,  You will finally see what God see, a MARVELOUS WORK OF ART! You’ll see a unique, and beautiful woman of God who doesn’t need to seek the approval of society (or a man) to see and know her true beauty.   Listen, when this verse came to life in my situation,  I stopped seeing dirt, and I started seeing flecks glitter! Seriously!  I’m convinced that God made lil ole’ me with an extra sprinkle of sparkle dust, lol! And He did just the same when He created you… you are special and set apart, created for His pleasure!

So the next time you look in the mirror, don’t you dare pick out your “flaws”. Don’t do it! Instead, speak this verse over your life like the most powerful affirmation you’ve ever created! Ask God to show you the beauty He placed within each and everyone one of us when we were created!  And when He shows you, believe Him and give thanks!

Marvelous are His works, and this your soul must know very well!

Challenge: If you know just how marvelous you are, I challenge you to proclaim that over your life in your next selfie post! Connect with me on IG and Twitter (@reese__dennis), and tag #IAFAWM (“I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made”) to let me know you believe it!  Let your girlfriends know, pass along this beautiful truth, you never know who needs it at this very moment!

Be encouraged ladies!

5 Essential “To-Dos” for a Flawless Face!

img_7732

As a self proclaimed makeup enthusiast, I am all about the best of beats. However, over the years I’ve learned that a flawless face begins with proper skin care, and a few basic habits to practice daily. In many instances, your makeup application is only as flawless as the skin that lies beneath. So before we talk about all the beloved potions and powders (I promise to post about that later in our Beauty Academy),  I wanted to share 5 essential “to-dos” to ensure a flawless face!

1. Cleanse your face daily.

Sounds simple, but I can’t even tell you how many women I’ve talked to who don’t wash their faces daily. This is a non-negotiable in my book.  When ever you put on makeup, it’s so important to remove it. Yes, I was once guilty of falling asleep with a full beat after a night of fun, but that soon changed as I saw the horrible effects that had on my skin. So now, no matter how tired I am, I remove my makeup and wash my face every evening. Then again in the morning.  A good makeup remover, along with a gentle cleanser, (I’m partial to Oil of Olay) will do wonders for the skin.

2. Use a deep cleansing masque/mask.

A good mask will cleanse your pores and give you a nice fresh face for application.  If you’re an oil-face like me, and you workout often, then you will find the need to deep cleanse more often than others. (I use mine once a week). I don’t want any gunk left on my face to clog my pores, which essentially leads to more break outs. Do yourself a favor, and invest in a deep cleansing mask.

3. Wash your makeup brushes.

I’m going to just say it… if you don’t wash your brushes, then washing your face is almost pointless. What some don’t realize is that on the surface of that beautiful fluffy brush are tiny little bacteria that will grow and cause breakouts if left unaddressed. And just think each time you dip that bacteria infested brush into your foundation it’s just spreading. Not to mention it can lead to very uneven, streaky application. So it’s time to get serious. Whether after you apply, or just before you go to bed, set aside some time to clean your brushes.

4. Use a daily moisturize.

I have combination/oily skin, so for years I was under the impression that facial moisturizers were only for those with dry skin. After doing my research, and speaking with the professionals, I came to understand that all skin needs moisture, and that there are actually a number of great serums and moisturizers for combination/oily skin. So regardless of the “type” of skin you may have, be sure to invest in a daily facial moisturizer, and use it.  And ladies, body lotion doesn’t count. The skin on your face is different from the skin on your body. So care for it accordingly!

5. Drink up, glow up.

Get your glow on, and drink more water. Many professionals  recommend that you drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily to keep you hydrated,  and help rid your body and skin of toxins. Many even say that drinking the proper amount, can leave you with a beautiful glow! We all know how important water is, so now it’s time to take it to the next level  and actually drink our daily dose.  So drink up! Your skin will love you for it!

5 Must-Haves for your Fabulous Handbag

1)  A Bomb Lip Balm: It’s cold outside and those lips need moisture now, more than an other season.  My favorite is the Jack Black Lip Balm in Natural Mint. I love the tingly sensation, and it truly leaves my lips soft and kissable (hubby agrees). No matter what you choose,  be sure to prep your lips before you layer your lip color. Your lips will thank you.  No chaps or CRACKS over here!

2) $20: When I started driving at age 23, (do NOT judge a sista lol), my dad always told me to carry at least $20 at all times.   I now live by this. Even if not $20, I carry some amount of cash in case of an emergency.   We’ve all seen those “cash only sorry for the inconvenience” signs at some point.  Take the hint and keep a little cash with you.

3) Gum/Mints: Do I even need to explain.  This is somewhat non-negotiable! My favorite gum is Trident White Spearmint. Freshens breath, and whitens teeth! **Insert pearly white smile** I always try to keep a pack in my handbag and in my glove compartment. Nothing more off-putting than a whiff bad breath, especially when you know you’re doing the offending! Yikes!

4) Spare Earrings: A quick fix for those crazy morning, especially when you’re rushing out.  Earrings can add an instant finish, even to the wildest of looks (well?). Take heed and stash a pair in your purse. I prefer studs because I can easily conceal them.

5) Confidence:  Now of course this won’t fit in your handbag, but it is oh so necessary! Like this little kitty, stand tall and proud!  Take a look in the mirror, and speak over your life before you leave the house. If you’ve already made it to the car… girl, adjust that rear-view mirror and get to talking! You are somebody, you will accomplish all that you set your mind to do! With God on your side, Nothing can stop you!

What are some of your must-haves in your handbag?

Stay encouraged and stylish
